Penn States special teams have been up and down this season. They had a rough game this past weekend. First there was the illegal substitution on a punt
which kept a Northwestern drive alive. Then there was the snap that was dropped by the Northwestern punter which Northwestern ended up turning into a first
down. Terrible play be Penn State. PSUs kickoff returns looked tentative on many returns. The special teams will need to play much better on Saturday.

John:
You missed one. After they were called for 12 men on the field, for the next punt they only had 19 on the field. Poor coaching at best. |

As you can tell, not much of a typist. 19 should be 10.

Thanks. I didn't remember about the 10.

On returns, the problem could be the blocking as much as the returner. There's plenty of speed....

Hats off for stellar play by James Van Fleet a walk on LB. 3 solo tackles.

Yes, Van Fleet had a good game. At one point, I had to check my roster to see who made a great special teams tackle, and it was Van Fleet.

I agree that special teams are not very strong. I know Derrick W. broke some returns last year, but in general the lack of any explosive special teams play has been an issue for years. We did get the block on the FG attempt last week, and really two TDs were set-up by good kick-off coverage when NW had trouble fielding the kicks and were dropped deep in their own territory. But that said I'd still say that overall PSU special teams play ranges between C+ and D-. I remember reading a few years ago - during the 'dark days' that there was not a specific special teams coach, or co-ordinator level guy. That instead ST's was handled in some sort of committee format. Well that's an obvious problem. Not sure if that's still the way it's done but if so it needs to change. |

Yes, it is still special teams by committee. PSU doesn't have a special teams coach.
The two NW kickoff drops hurt them but that was more a product of NW mistakes and not great PSU special teams play. However, PSU special teams did pin Northwestern deep in their own territory. We Are...Penn State!

On the kickoff and punt returns this year, the strategy seems to be "don't screw up and lose the ball" rather than seeing it as an opportunity to
advance the ball. The kicker (Wagner) has limited range but has improved his accuracy during the season. The punter is good, albeit a little slow in getting
the ball off. Dailey has made some plays on special teams this season, but beyond that, I'm having a hard time thinking of other standouts.

Everything that everybody said is true but (probably known by everyone) you can only have a finite number of coaches. If you hire a special teams coach you
have to fire another. Which coach would you like to get rid of? I can't think of one I would eradicate and have a special teams coach in its place.

Anderson and Kenney share the OL/TE coaching duties. Make one of them the OL/TE coach and the other a special teams coach.

Remember Robbie Gould? When he got to the Bears, he beat out other kickers. When asked why he had improved, said that for the first time, he had a special
teams coach who concentrated knowledgeable time with him. Every pro team has a special teams coach as do alot of major NCAA Div 1 teams.
Suggestion- replace Jay Paterno with a special teams coach. |

Ha! I like your suggestion, Al.
